First day of installation

The beginning of a new journey – there were excitement in the air, we took the opportunity to celebrate and create memories of her afro look. An art on its own, loose, dense, soft to the touch, voluminous with a bounce, an unique texture.

If I had any idea of how her locks would look in term of texture? NOT AT ALL, all I was concerned about, was her scalp to be covered, just like the way her afro is looking: full and voluminous
Hidden length

That’s the characteristic of Afro kinky hair, and they come with a different degree of shrinkage: the looser the curls, the more distinctive, eye catching and mouth drooling is the look.
The tighter the curls, the closer they are to the scalp, (well… the type of textures that don’t get the likes on social media…AT ALL)
…anyway, what is important to bear in mind is that, the visual look of an afro can be very deceptive, big hair doesn’t necessary mean density, and teeny-weeny afro sometimes, LORD!!! when you think it would only take few minutes, and hours later, you still at it.
All locked up

Time to reveal how well the scalp is covered, after working through challenges, such as thin strands and patches.
They are falling nicely into a defined ringlets curls, showing fabulous spiral tips. The transformation looked A…MA…ZING

True moment

Part of the excitement is her first reaction, when she’s starring at her reflexion for the first time.
No need to question how she’s feeling about the look, her eyes were saying it all.
It starts very thin

Watch this lock quadrupled or even quintupled in size, when you leave it undisturbed, of course.
A close look of the interlocked curls

The grouped strands hairs are entwined into a plaited form, with a consistency in the pattern from the tip to the base.
What I’m aiming for, is to achieve a visual harmony.
“Be ready for the world to see her”
The curls on the scalp

Any idea of the different textures on your scalp?
Before the magic happened, her hair density and characteristics were previously examined, and I always look for any existing patches, scars, thin strands, dents…
You’ll never know what an afro can hide, maintaining the locks is about being aware of what might affect them to form healthily.
It is all about reproducing the natural appearance of her original hair

The “art” is to strike the right “balance” between simply achieving “coverage” and producing a natural looking pattern.
Overall appearance

Enough density is achieved for her to have a full look. Patches are undetectable and are left alone to recover; new growth are expected in the future around the thinner locks. It was the beginning of a journey toward healthy maintenance.
